DEBBIE AND BOB'S COTTAGE CONTINUED ...

The exterior of Debbie and Bob's cottage takes a beating from the storms on the lake. The original cottage used cedar shingles which are showing some wear and tear. The owners plan to replace all the doors and windows, so now might be the time to update the style of the cottage from "chalet" to "coastal".

Painting the trim and windows white would provide a good contrast and give the cottage a coastal feel.

The chalet style balcony along the front and back of the existing cottage is in need of some repairs. It is more a decorative element than a functional element and should be removed to give the cottage an updated look. I suggest replacing it with a porch in the front and a pergola in the back.

A front porch provides a focal point and increases a home's curb appeal. It also provides shelter from the rain when answering the door. By removing the balconies, the second floor sliding doors can now all be replaced with windows, making room to install a front porch.

The front porch could just be an overhang or an enclosed mudroom with storage for coats and boots. This would solve the problem of walking directly into the living space when entering the cottage.The overhang porch could be a temporary solution until the owners decide to enclose the space.

Two examples of a front entrance are below. You could add a bold colour to the front door for an inviting look!

A pergola could replace the balcony at the back of the cottage. Depending on building permits and the size, the pergola could run the entire length of the cottage and provide not only shade and a place for flowering vines to grow; but a WOW factor too!
