CATHY AND SCOTT - MAIN BATHROOM
Cathy and Scott own an beautiful older home built in 1895 that has lots of charm and original wood trim. Along with this charm comes some quirky design features such as the bathroom off of the kitchen. This bathroom is the main bathroom for the family and their guests.
Cathy likes the location of the bathroom directly off of the kitchen (below), especially when the kids were young and getting ready for school as she could watch them while she made breakfast.

We took elements of the kitchen (above) and added them to the bathroom to make the rooms cohesive; for example, the bead board and shaker style cabinet doors/drawers, the dark countertops and the black accents and hardware. These elements are depicted in the perspective drawing below.
The bathroom footprint will remain the same (below), saving the home owners money on plumbing costs since the bathroom fixtures will not be moved. The floors will remain the same as the kitchen, again saving money and keeping the flow between the two rooms consistent.
Cathy complained the shower was too small; although we will not be expanding the shower it will appear larger with 12" x 24" marble tiles and a glass door. The tiles can be installed stacked for a modern look or subway as shown in the perspective drawing for a look more suited to the age of the home.
The dividing pony wall is extended to add more privacy from an open door and to add more storage. The bead board, cabinets and walls will be painted the same colour as the kitchen cabinets, Benjamin Moore OC-85 "mayonaise." This light colour palette makes the small bathroom feel more spacious. Colour can be added in the accessories to add energy to the space. Suggested accent colours are Benjamin Moore CC-698 "killarney" or Benjamin Moore HC-149 "buxton blue."
The florescent light fixture will be replaced with two pendant lights more appropriate to the age of the home. An upper cabinet will be added, in addition to the existing cabinet, for symmetry and extra storage.
A ledge could be added to the bead board for displaying art or treasured objects. Hooks have been added above the bead board beside the shower to hang towels and a mirror can be added above the hooks if more space is needed to put on make-up or to dry your hair.
