PAM AND DAVE - MOVING AN ISLAND
Dave and I owned a summer house while we lived in Europe. It was very functional when we visited a few weeks here and there throughout the year, but now that we have moved home, it needs some work.
The first thing we did was move the kitchen island. The distance between the counter and the island was 60" and it encroached on the living space. If space was not an issue the location of the island was fine; but we needed the space in the living room so we moved the island 20". It's not a lot, but it made a BIG difference. Everyone said I was crazy to move the island because of the cost and work involved; but it was the RIGHT decision.
The kitchen functions better and provides much more storage now.
The new pantry balances the refrigerator at the other end of the counter and defines the kitchen area.

Moving the island took a lot of hard work, but it was worth it. We had to replace part of the floor and cut into the basement ceiling to move the existing plumbing to the new location.
We also added a pantry to give us more storage space. We removed an existing blackboard to accommodate the pantry.
We also replaced the tray sink with an apron sink giving us more counter space. We kept the existing faucet.
The new apron sink is deep and allows for large pots ... and even paint trays!
The laminate countertops were replaced with stone. It provides a nice contrast with the dark cabinets and floors, and brightens up the space. The modern light fixtures were replaced with a more industrial nautical look.
We are happy with the overall renovation. It not only functions well, but looks great too. We did most of the work ourselves, but had to call in a plumber and an electrician. The pantry is from Distinctive Kitchens of London and the countertop from Sloan Stone Design.You can save a lot of money by doing the renovations yourself, but you must know when to call in the experts.
